David Dunn's article examines how sound is used for music, art, and philosophy. His work involves capturing the sounds of nature's landscapes and giving them the respect they deserve. He believes in conserving the environment through sound and give honor to the complex sound systems that are non-human. Below is his photograph.
One of his most well known projects is called, "The Lion in Which the Spirits of the Royal Ancestors Make Their Home" which can be bought on CD. It includes African chanting and various animal and nature sounds. It is a project which aims to preserve the culture and environment of the area it surrounds. Sound has context.
One of the most interesting points in his article is that he differentiates his art from that of John Cage. Dunn believes that sound should be re-contexualized instead of de-contextualized unlike Cage.
John Cage's 4'33 brought about a musical philosophical revolution--What is music? His answers: All sounds!!! That was the purpose of the silence and the audience's sounds as music.
